Beautiful in death was the little girl we all loved. Mary Doel, the sunshine and comfort of the home, the interested and interesting little friend of everybody in her circle of acquaintances, died last Saturday morning, November 4th, at four minutes of five o'clock. Mary was born in Carbondale February 22nd, 1899 and remained here but 6 years, 8 months and 13 days. The little life was oh so brief but the days were all so full, for Mary was a happy, animated child, full of life, health and spirit. Loving and lovable, generous and winsome the little favorite has left a home bereft of sunshine and a vacancy in the Sunday School and school where her sweet little voice could always be heard clear and strong singing the songs she loved. During the first week of her sickness she often asked her sister to play for her and each day to the piano accompaniment she sang or hummed. The second week she lost her voice but never her happy spirit and to the very end took willingly, even eagerly, her medicine hoping to be well again.
As diphtheria was the cause of little Mary's death there could be no public funeral but on Saturday evening the little casket was sealed in the rough box and the house thoroughly disinfected so that Rev. Brown was allowed to stand on the porch, offer prayer and say a few words of heartfelt sympathy. Neighbors and friends gathered in the yard to show the sympathy they felt but could not put into deeds. The floral offerings were lavish and told of the love of many hearts.
The sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out to the parents, brothers and sister in their loneliness.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who were so kind and sympathetic during the sickness and death of our darling little daughter and sister, and for the beautiful floral offerings.—MR. AND MRS. D. S. DOEL AND FAMILY.

Note: Mary's middle name may be Rebecca, in honor of her maternal grandmother.
