Janet E. Martin, 101, of Chenango Bridge, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Janurary 19, 2010. She would have been 102 on January 29th. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Martha Smith; her husband, David H. Martin; her son, Charles Martin; her brother, Roland Smith; her sister, Marguerite Browning; and her daughter-in-law, Patricia Marhefka Martin. She is survived by her son, David S. Martin (Louise) of Port Crane. Surviving grandchildren include Janet Tyler (George), Francis Martin (Lori), Carole Walentynowicz (Robert), Jorene Lomenzo (Richard), and Karen Ringel (Mark). She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Gregg Tyler (Celeste), Michael Tyler, Christopher and Gina Martin, David and Megan Walentynowicz and Olivia Ringel; and nieces, Patricia Paige, Oleta Zaczyk, Toni Smiley, and Kendra Dayger. Nephew, Douglas Dayger also survives. She recently became acquainted with her first great-great-granddaughter, Natalie Louise Tyler, born on October 12, 2009. Janet's life was a simple one, being spent as a homemaker, mother to her sons and grandmother to her grand and great-grandchildren. She greatly enjoyed cooking, sewing and camping. She was a lifelong member of Binghamton's West Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband sang in the choir throughout their lives.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, NY, with Pastor Daniel Baker officiating. The family will greet friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Hilltop Retirement Center and The James G. Johnston Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Mom. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Janet's memory to The Multiple Sclerosis Society, 457 State Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.
