Ethelma lived in Baker and Salem, and she attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. She spent time with her maternal grandfather, Daniel Lee Wyatt (1864-1929). She eventually moved to Tacoma, Washington. She married John Artoe in November 1940. After John died, in 1972, Ethelma moved to Puyallup. In 1976, she became ill and moved to Milwaukie, Oregon, August 1976. She died there 2 February 1979.
Ethelma studied genealogy and family history for 30 years. Wyatt described her interest as "a consuming avocation." He cites her passion for finding records that provide the proof for information in her family tree. The GFO holds her extensive personal papers collection.
