In a biography of Ethelma written by Genealogical Forum of Oregon (GFO) member Harold A Wyatt in April 1999. In it, he notes that she was born Lenora Ethelma Edwards on 22 May 1908 in Baker, Oregon. She was the oldest child of Henry C. Edwards (1886-1945) and Nora Ethel Wyatt (1889-1974). The parents divorced early and Ethelma was raised by her mother. Her brother was raised by their father.
Ethelma lived in Baker and Salem, and she attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. She spent time with her maternal grandfather, Daniel Lee Wyatt (1864-1929). She eventually moved to Tacoma, Washington. She married John Artoe in November 1940. After John died, in 1972, Ethelma moved to Puyallup. In 1976, she became ill and moved to Milwaukie, Oregon, August 1976. She died there 2 February 1979.
Ethelma studied genealogy and family history for 30 years. Wyatt described her interest as "a consuming avocation." He cites her passion for finding records that provide the proof for information in her family tree. The GFO holds her extensive personal papers collection.
