Clarence Albert Doel was born June 7, 1902, at Grove, Kansas, the son of George L. Doel and Evelyn Hylt Doel. He was raised in the Grove community and attended Sunbeam country school. He lived most of his life in North Topeka. He was married to Lillian Polley on February 3, 1938, at Oskaloosa. He had owned and operated a feed store and a garage in North Topeka, over-the-road freight transportation trucks, dump trucks, the Lakeside Inn at Silver Lake, and Doel's Pawn Shop in North Topeka. He also worked for the Page Milling Co. in the 1930s and was a truck driver for Kansas Sand Company.
