Mr. George died Tuesday, September 26, 2006, at West TN Transitional Care. He was born December 3, 1922 in Whistler, AL, son of the late Robert Clyde and Sarah Annie Lowry George, and moved to Jackson at the age of two. He was educated in Jackson Public Schools and served with the U. S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, he went to work in the family business, George's Florist, which he operated for more than sixty years.
Mr. George served on the County Commission from 1955 until 1994. he served as County Commission Pro-Tem for more than thirty years and was called into active service in that capacity on two different occasions. He was liaison to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital for thirty-eight years. He was Past Master of Jackson Masonic Lodge #45 and a member of Englewood Baptist Church.
He leaves his wife of fifty-six years, Ilean George; a daughter, Cathy Vinson and her husband, Billy; two sons, Robert George and his wife, Penny, and Paul George and his wife, Linda, all of Jackson. He also leaves five grandchildren, Amanda Kirkbride and her husband, Ryan, Elizabeth Vinson, Bethany George, Austin George and Brooke George; amd one great grandchild, Alex Kirkbride.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Grace and Laurie Ferguson.
Casketbears to serve are Robert E (Bobby) Ferguson, Chuck McLemore, Robert Rushing, Ashley Tanner, Austin George, Richard Swaim, Hugh Blackmon and John D. Graham. Honorary casketbearers are Ben Langford, Lacy Rose, Joe Gaffney, Walter Baker Harris, Joe Nip McKnight, Ed McAlister, Clarence Johnson, Bob Conger, Jack A. Smith and Jerry Smith.
