One of twin sons. Graduated at Yale Medical college 1834. Married Sarah Nichols 1834. Came to Rochester about 1840. Physician at Rochester General Hospital. Wilderness enthusiast, and hobbyist mapmaker. Ely drafted the first detailed map of the Adirondack wilderness, showing most of its water courses, peaks, and topography in 1867. Though mapmaking was a passionate hobby of Dr. Ely's, his maps dominated the world of Adirondack maps until nearly the turn of the century.
