Jefferson "Jeffie" Doggett was the adopted son of Aristides and Ann Timothy Doggett. Their son, John Locke Doggett, who wrote about Jeffie, said that he was from a large Catholic family in Marietta, Georgia and that Ann, upon hearing the family was starving "since the ruin of their father by the war" took a train up to Marietta (a place where the Doggett family boarded in summers) and adopted Jeffie and brought him back to Jacksonville. Later, he became a railroad conductor and, according to Doggett's written account, was killed riding on the rear of a train from Fernandina when he leaned out and his "head struck some projection along the right of way . . ." Jeffie and his adoptive mother were very close and attended Catholic church together. Ann refers to Jeffie by name in a letter dated 1883 that is in the possession of the Doggett family.
The estate of Jefferson M. Doggett, who died intestate, was administered by H. H. Buckman. The will document states that his widow was named Emma and that at time of his death, she was under the age of 21 years. The estate was valued at less than $2,000 consisting primarily of a small piece of land - location unidentified.
