He was born June 27, 1904, in Amherst County, a son of the late John Jackquelin Ambler III and Janet Ann Carter Ambler.
He was associated with the Virginia Highway Department for 52 years, and, at the time of his retirement in 1973, was district engineer.
Mr. Ambler was a member of the Monticello Guard, a former member of the Lions Club and a charter member of the Izaak Walton League.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Doss Ambler, on July 16, 1974; and a son, Robert Cary Ambler Jr., on Feb. 24, 1974.
Surviving are two sons, John D. Ambler of Wilton, Conn., and two daughters, Mrs. Samuel J. (Janet) Joseph Jr. of Charlottesville and May Ellen Ambler of Richmond; two brothers, Carter Ambler and Royall Ambler, both of Amherst; a sister, Janet W. Ambler of Amherst; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Hamrick Funeral Home by Dr. J.H.J. Vernon. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville by the Rev. J.J. Ambler IV.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons and Ralph E. Carty.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m.
It is suggested that memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice.
