He was born in Missouri and was the son of Ira S and Mary F Smith Schureman He began his career with Western Light and Telephone, working in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri, then with General Telephone in Illinois, Kansas Co-Op and Western State in Arizona. He worked 23 and a half years for Duo County Telephone in Jamestown as General Manager. He started in Sept of 1959 and retired in 1983. When he started in 1959 there were only 1,283 telephones in the system which includes Russell and portions of Cumberland and Adair County. In 1983 there were 9,558 telephones in the system. Orville is given credit for the growth. In all, he worked 48 years in the telephone industry. When he started here in 1959 the phone company net worth was $800,000 and when he retired it was over $12 million. He was named "Man of the Year" in 1976 and was was a member of the Jamestown Christian Church, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Jamestown's Lion Club, past president of the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce and served as Chairman of the Jamestown Water Board for eleven years. He was married to Thera Cothes for 37 years and then married Carolyn Waits after the death of his first wife. Children: Ronnie and Jerry. Stepchildren: Greg and Gene Shaw and Angelia Bryant. When he died the phone company sent a large wreath of flowers in the shape of a phone to the funeral home.
