MEMORIES
Bonnie Lee McCracken was born on September 26, 1926 in Dalhart, Dallam, Texas. Bonnie Lee was the third daughter of Russell Sage and Clare Myrtle McCracken. While in Dalhart, Texas, her mother, Clara Myrtle, entered nursing school and her father, Russell Sage McCracken, worked as an auto mechanic. In the summer of 1930, Clara Myrtle, Betty Jo and Bonnie Lee drove back to Colorado where they lived with Charles and America Hoar in Hartman, Colorado. In 1931 Clara Myrtle filed for a divorce from Russell Sage McCracken. In 1933 Clara Myrtle McCracken married Dr. Frank E. Casburn. The family moved into the apartment which was located in the back part of the building that housed the medical office, in Holly, Colorado. Dr. Frank E. Casburn had a stroke in 1935. He died on January 30, 1937 in Lamar, Prowers, Colorado.
Clara Myrtle, Betty Jo and Bonnie Lee moved into a house across the street from the Catholic Church. Clara Myrtle tried to return to home nursing but the dust storms made it impossible to live in Holly. In 1938 the family moved to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado. Here, Clara Myrtle rented a house on Fountain Street and started a board and rooming home. In 1939 Clara borrowed $1000.00 and bought the house at 920 East Costilla which became The Casburn Nursing Home. Bonnie Lee attended St. Mary's High School during her freshman year, 1940-1941. From 1941-1944 she attended St. Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Fremont, Colorado, where she completed her sophomore, junior and senior years of high school. Bonnie Lee then went to Loretto Heights College, Denver, Colorado for her freshman year of college. Her sophomore and junior college years were spent at Webster College, Webster Groves, Missouri. While attending Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, at a Webster College dance, Albert Lucian Mercier met his future wife, Bonnie Lee McCracken. Albert Lucian Mercier and Bonnie Lee McCracken married on April 7, 1948 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born to the couple were three daughters and three sons. Albert, Bonnie and their children were active members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Houston, Texas. In about 1967 Bonnie Lee and Albert Lucian divorced. Bonnie Lee moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she lived next door to her mother, Clara Myrtle Casburn. She lived in the little cottage until the death of her mother, which was in 1989. At times Bonnie Lee tried living on her own but was most content when living with one of her children. She lived in Colorado, Arizona, California and Oregon. Bonnie Lee McCracken Mercier, 85, died Saturday, December 24, 2011, at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center, in Mt. Angel, Oregon.
