Serafino Calcagno was born
and raised in Bronte, Provincia di Catania, Sicily.

His Parents were :
*Tommaso Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicily
*Maria Gullo of Bronte, Sicily

His Maternal Grandparents were:
*Serafino Gullo of Bronte
*Nunziata Luca of Bronte

His Paternal Grandparents were:
*Vincenzo Calcagno of Randazzo
*Francesca Calcagno of Randazzo

And as was the Italian custom he was named after his maternal Grandfather.

He had the following siblings:

*Francesca
*Vincenza
*Gaspare
*Elisabetta
*Giuseppe
*Agatina
*Nunziata
*Serafino (Ensulo)

Serafino grew up and did his schooling in Bronte.

As a young man Serafino was lucky to get a job at the large Duke of Nelson Estate in Bronte and worked there as a driver and estate handyman. Serafino enjoyed being a driver for the Duke's family and he enjoyed working on their cars. What he didn't like was having to do farm work when the Royals were back in England. Running a farm tractor was not his cup of tea. So he quit working for the Duke.
When his mother asked Serafino why he quit his good job, he told her, "I'm not the one who nailed Christ to the cross, why should I be doing that back breaking work".

Serafino did not like Bronte's small town life and he took off and went to the big city of Catania. And for the rest of his life he preferred living in big cities.

He later joined the Italian Army and during WWII saw combat in Greece and the Balkans. In 1943 when Italy surrendered to the Allies, Serafino's unit was then taken prisoner by the German forces. Serafino and his group were sent to Germany where they were held in a POW camp till the end of the war. Conditions were very tough in that camp and many Italian POWs lost their lives. Serafino was lucky to survive.

Interesting to note that Serafino had a gift for learning languages. During his military duty in Greece he learned the language and became fluent in it. And Greek is very different than Italian.

After the war Serafino immigrated to the USA. He settled in New York City and worked in the auto repair business. He remained in New York for the rest of his life.

Serafino was a very independent man and never married and had no children.
