This is John Patrick "Pump" Saunders, who came to America in the 1880s from Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas. He is the son of Benjamin "Pump" Saunders and Amanda Lowe, and several of John's siblings also came to America -- Cinderella (1854-1933), Mary Charlotte (1851-1936), Margaret Lowe (1855-1950) and Sara Ella (1868-1921). John also had two brothers, William and Maxwell -- who both also came to Florida. John "Pump" Saunders was married to Mary Jane Lowe, who moved to Miami several years after being widowed in Key West.

This John is the father of Capt. Eddie "Bra" Saunders who was the fisherman who took Ernest Hemingway out quite frequently.

John was naturalized in 1892.

NOTE: We know that our John Patrick "Pump" Saunders is in this cemetery. We will get more specific about which 1909 month (June or Dec) is actually our John. Two John Saunders died and were buried in the Key West Cem during 1909. We do know that John Saunders died between 1906 -- when he is in the city directory as "John P." with several of his children at the same address -- and 1910, when his wife is widowed in the census.

Gravesite Details

We think he's a few graves north of his daughter, Charlotte "Lottie" Saunders Gates in the Debarcee Subdivision. His plot was bought by Eddie "Bra" Saunders, his son, in 1911.
