Alexis P. Bailly Jr. was born November 23, 1826 in St. Peter (now Mendota), MN. When he was 7 his family moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He was sent to boarding school in St. Louis, Missouri and Hillsboro, Illinois. The 1850 census lists him as farming at Wabasha and married. The 1860 census has him living in the third ward of Hastings and his occupation is "land dealer."
His first wife, Elizabeth Dunn died October 1861. They had six children (Belle A., Alexis F., George H., Esther E., Ida C., and Charles E.) together. He married his second wife Christine Burch December 23, 1861. They would have twelve children together (Daniel G., Mary E., John H., Anna C., Lucinda H., Carlyle B., Jerminah M., Elizabeth J., Samuel A., Maude F., Grover C., and David N.) Alexis Jr. enlisted in Company G of the 5th Minnesota Regiment on January 5, 1862. He was appointed First Lieutenant of the Company and served for about a year during which the 5th Minnesota Regiment participated in several battles. He resigned his position on July 22, 1863 as the regiment was concluding guard duty.
In 1879 he moved to South Dakota, initially settling in Grant County. He served two terms as Register of Deeds until 1882 when he refused to be a party to the moving of the County Seat from Big Stone City to Milbank. In 1894 he moved to Codington County on a farm about 15 miles northwest of Watertown, SD. He was a member of the GAR.
On Sept 18, 1898, Alexis Bailly Jr. died in Watertown, South Dakota.
