John Bonnell a Rev. War veteran was the first Bonnell to li ve in Pine
Creek, later lived at the mouth of Paxtang Creek (now Harri sburg, PA).
Most of his children were bore there. After the Rev. War, h e purchased
land near Jersey Shore where other veterans settled.

certified, that the records of this office show that John B onnell served
as Private, First Regiment, Essex Co. Militia; served unde r Captains
Stephen Chandler and Daniel Smith Wood. Was at the battle o f Springfield
Dec. 17, 1776.
Was pensioned 1757-1845. Moved to Paxton Creek 1779.

by Col. James Burn, Mar. 13, 1776, 4th Battalion, Lancaste r Co. Militia
Company, raised in upper Paxtang and Hanover. John Bonnel l 4th Serg.,
detachment under Capt. James Rutherford, marched to Bedfor d Co. April,
1779 for the protection of the inhabitants.
After the War of the Revolution, he came to Lycoming Count y where
he purchased land about 1/2 mile south of Jersev Shore, Pa.
Following are the officers under whom he had served: Capt . Richard
Manning and Thomas Forster, who were the first settlers an d founders of
"Jersey Shore".
The name of Bonnell was formerly spelled "Buenell" and i s a French
name. Thev with others were driven out of France on accoun t of their
religious beliefs. Went to Northern Eng1and and then to Ame rica, settling
in New Jersey. From New Jersey.my ancestor (John Bonnell) m igrated to
Lancaster County, then to Jersey Shore, Pa., and from her e to Erie, Pa.,
where he died. He sold his property in Jersey Shore aroun d 1800 and
moved to Erie, Pa.
He was a private in Captain Richard Manning's commanded b y Col.
James Bird March 13, 1776, 4th Battalion Lancaster Countv M ilitia. The
Company was raised in upper Paxtang and Hanover.
John Bonnell, 4th Sergeant, detachment under Capt. James Ri therford,
marched to Bedford Countv April 1779 for the protection o f the
inhabitants.
After the war of the Revolution was over, he came to Lycomi ng County
where he purchased a farm about one-half mile south of Jers ey Shore -
following the officers under whom he served - Capt. Richar d Manning and
Thomas Forster -who were the first settlers and founders o f JerseyShore.
John Bonnell lived to a great age and died at Erie. He wa s buried
at Waterford about flifteen miles from Erie He had four son s, namely --
John, Thomas, George and William.

now 1st Ward of Harrisburg, 10th of June, 1780.
In 1794 his father moved to what is now Jersey Shore, on th e farm
owned by Joe Stevens and the rich valley of the West Branch .was a
comparative wilderness. Later when his father sold his prop erty and
went to Erie, Pa, sons. John and George went up Pine Creek . . John
settled four miles below Waterville (where the Boy Scout Ca mp Kline now
is) & died there at age 94 years. He went there about 1802.
