Russell "Russ" Klar was a race driver born on April 27th, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York. He starting racing midgets during the 1930s being competitive into his 60's retiring in 1983. He was known as a midget driver but but also raced Indy Cars, three quarter midgets, sprint cars, open wheel modifieds and NASCAR modifieds. His signature win came when he won the AAA Sprint Car race at the Illiana Speedway in Schererville, Indiana on July 18th, 1953.
In 1955 Russ Klar was entered in the Indianapolis 500 assigned to the #61 Ray Brady Special. He passed his rookie test, practiced and qualified at a speed of 131.301 which was too slow to make the starting field. This would be his only attempt at Indianapolis.
Russ Klar was a World War II Veteran serving in the Unites States Army. He died on February 16th, 2005 in Lynbrook, Long Island, New York.
