Born in Florida to a German immigrant father, he moved to New York City as a young man. In 1910, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served eight years until November 16, 1918, when he discharged from the destroyer USS Barry at Charleston, SC, with the rate of Gunner's Mate 2c. During WW1, he served on the destroyer USS Dale patrolling the Eastern Mediterranean for U-boat interdiction from April 1917 until November 11, 1918. After leaving the Navy he worked as an iron worker until 1922 when he joined the FDNY. He was a New York city fireman for 20 years, assigned to Engine Co. 31 at 87 Lafayette St. in the Chinatown area of Manhattan, until he retired in June 1942. He was married to Mary Wenzel and made his home at 97-40 81st St., Ozone Pk., NY until he died in 1963. They had no children.
