Letter from a fellow soldier:
Wilcox Landing James River Va June 25, 1864
Miss Durkee
a moment is all the time I have. Hiram is dead. shot the 28th of May at the Battle of "Anon Church" [Enon Church] through the Breast and I think through the heart. he never spoke or barely moved - a brave boy and a good soldier was he - the Boys in the Rgt Mourn for him as deeply as friends can at home. his private property was most all lost. Except a few trifling articles. I have his horse and am waiting to hear from his friends in N. Jersey. he had some private money matters unsettled which I shall settle - Myself and Hammie are well but nearly used up. this day is the first mail we have had in 22 days - Regt. has 133 men left in it. Very Respectly yours
