John Gilbert Acosta
(June 19, 1938 - June 22, 2008)

John was born June 19, 1938 to the late B. F. and Stella Gomez Acosta. He attended and graduated from Bay City High School. John served 3 years in the US Marine Corps before beginning a career with the US Postal Service that lasted 41 years. In an article written in 2002, John stated that he had reached his goal to become a Postmaster; he was ready to retire. In his spare time John officiated basketball, baseball, softball, football, and most recently volleyball. John also coached in his spare time at Holy Cross Elementary where he began the track team and softball team in the 1970's. He was the coach of the Invaders girls' softball team for many years.

In his 40's and 50's John was an avid runner. Many knew him as the lunchtime runner, running on his lunch breaks then returning to work. John entered and placed in many fun runs in nearby towns and accepted numerous trophies. John was a Dallas Cowboys fan and a great fan of the San Antonio Spurs. He enjoyed watching all sports; his favorite team was the UT Longhorns.

John was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City where he was a Sacristan, Usher, member of the Militia of the Immaculata, and the Knight of Columbus. John loved his church and his Savior.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Margaret Ottino Acosta; daughter Dee Ann Schwan & husband Alex; granddaughter Devin Schwan; sisters Alice Villarreal & Mary Ann Cervantes; and brothers Anthony & Albert Acosta.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws John & Dorothy Ottino; brother-in-law Johnny V. "Jay" Ottino; sisters Lucy Delos Santos, Esther Acosta, Katy Charles, & Stella Silva; and brothers Abel & Louis Acosta.

A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Mass will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery.
