SAN ANGELO James Emmett Keating of San Angelo passed away peacefully at 11:55 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in San Angelo on Sept. 10, 1932 to Emmett and LaVilla Keating. He graduated from San Angelo High School and attended Texas Tech University before being drafted into the United States Army. He served two years at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. While at Fort Hood he worked on repairing tanks.

He married Joan Barnett on Nov. 30, 1956 and they were married for 55 years. They were members of Johnson Street Church of Christ. James was employed by General Telephone Company of the Southwest in San Angelo for 40 years before his retirement in December of 1996. He enjoyed working in his yard and hanging out at Jim Bass Ford. He was a Dallas Cowboy fan through good times and bad. He was a member of Community Health Club for 16 years and worked out faithfully three days a week. James took care of his wife, Joan who has Alzheimer's until he could no longer give her the proper care she needed, but visited her daily at Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center. His two grandsons, Matthew and Tanner called him Bubba and he looked forward to their visits and visiting them in San Antonio.

James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan; his daughter and her husband, Julie and Scott Lawlis of San Antonio; two grandsons, Matthew and Tanner Lawlis of San Antonio; a son, Todd Keating of The Woodlands; a sister, Patsy Leffel of Dallas; and three nieces and a nephew. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Tommy King, minister of Johnson Street Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the compassionate staff at Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center in San Antonio for the loving and tender care they gave James during his final weeks. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society , Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center or to your favorite charity .
