Henry McClelland was born in Lickling Co., Ohio to Alexander McClelland and Catherine Courson. Henry's father and both of his grandfathers had fought in the Revolutionary War. His Grandfather John McClelland was killed at the Battle of Sandusky and his Grandfather Benjamin Courson was seriously wounded while loading a cannon. Henry's father Alexander had faired much better and after the war was given 300 acres of land in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1795 Alexander married Catherine and by 1797 the family had moved on to Lickling County, Ohio to farm. Henry was born in Ohio; the youngest of 10 children born to Alexander and Catherine and when he was only 6 years old Henry's father passed away.

On April 8, 1841 Henry married Sarah Ann Pring. Later that year the couple set off for Illinois with his mother and his sister Rachel's family. Henry's older brothers had settled in the Sandoval, Illinois area 10 or more years earlier and Sandoval is where he made his home. He farmed about 175 acres and he and Sarah raised 9 children there. Henry and Sarah remained on that farm until their deaths.
