Rev. Edwin Ruthven Keyes was the son of Solomon and Sophia (Stearns) Keyes. He was the husband of Sarah Ann (Bradshaw) Keyes. Rev. Keyes was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church: Genesee (now Western New York) Conference 1850 Served Williamsville, NY 1850-1851 F 1852 New York Conference by transfer 1854 Wyoming Conference 1864 Maine Conference by transfer 1867 New York Conference by transfer 1869 Withdrew to join the ministry of the Swedenborgian Church, Portland, Maine 1870 Philadelphia PA: Broad Street 1871-1873 He became an attorney in Yonkers, NY 1873. He served during the Civil War.

VII Keyes, Edwin R (469), is a graduate of the Wesleyan University at Middletown, Conn., of the Class of 1848, having prepared for college at Lima, Livingston Co., New York, Genesee Wesleyan Seminary. After his graduation he taught at the Academy at Henrietta, during the winter of 1848-1849, taught at the Academy at Livingston, eight months, when he was compelled to leave on account of his anti-slavery views, and his support of the Wilmot Proviso. Then taught in Madeison, Indiana. In October 1850, was admitted on trial as a preacher in the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Preached at Williamsville, Erie Co., New York and at Alexander, New York. Was then transferred to the New York Conference and stationed at Vestry Street in New York City, to fill an unexpired term. Afterward he preached at Tarrytown, Newburg, New York in Westchester County at Sing Sing and Yonkers. Was chaplain of the New York Heavy Artillery from May to Sept. 1863, when on account of ill health, he resigned. He was then stationed at Oswego, Tioga Co., New York then at Poughkeepsie, New York in Cannon Street Church, and in the Chestnut Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Portland, Maine, being transferred thither at the request of that church. About this time, Mr. Keyes dissolved his connection with the Methodist Episcopal Church, in consequence of having embraced the doctrines of Swedenborg, and preached for a time for the New Church in Portland, Maine, then as a New Church Missionary, mostly in the Hudson River towns. From October 1871, he preached two years in the New Church Society on Broad St., Philadelphia, Penn. His health failing, he removed to Yonkers, November 1873, where he has since resided. Mr. Keyes was admitted to the Bar, May 12, 1862 (having graduated at the Law School of the University of New York City), and opened a law office in Yonkers, April 1874. He has a large law practice, and holds various offices, connected with educational and other departments. He married August 4, 1849, at Livingston, Nelson Co., Virginia, Sarah Ann, eldest daughter of Benj. and Rhoda Ann Bradshaw, b. at Fabers Mills, Nelson Co., Virginia June 14, 1827. They were married by Rev. John Howard.
