The headstone is made of a very weathered white material and the writing is very hard to read. The white stone is placed right next to a dark reddish brown stone which has writing that indicates that it marks the resting place of Mrs. Caspar Bauman. {The woman, Margrede, buried next to this stone died before her husband, Caspar, & she is 13 years older, being born in 1711. Caspar would have been about 52 years old at the time of her death in March of 1777.} The inscription on the white stone is in German. A May 1972 preface in a small booklet written by Mrs. Abraham K. Gehman of Bally, PA, indicates that the Hereford Mennonite Grounds Committee helped to catalogue & translate as many stones as possible in this cemetery over the years. (It has also been reported that a record of the inscription of the stones was written in 1934.) The translation of the white stone written in these records is: "Here rest the remains of Chasber Bauman, born Jan 6, 1724, died July 11, 1789. Age 65 yr." "Casper/Crosper/Grosper Bowmen/Bowman/Bauman" born 1724 was reported to arrive in the USA in Philadelphia, PA on October 14, 1731 on the ship the "Snow" Lowther out of Rotterdam. Caspar (Ghaspar) Bauman signed the ship list B & C when he arrived in Philadelphia & a copy of his signature appears in the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers." However, the Caspar Bauman buried here would have been only 7 years old on that date & would not have been required to sign those documents at such a young age.
