WITTLER-LaVern Edward was born to Herman and Freda (Rinne) Wittler on a farm near Brock, NE, on March 30, 1923. He graduated from Brock High School in 1940 and attended the University of Nebraska. He entered the United States Navy in April, 1944; while in the Navy, he attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. He served on the destroyer U.S.S. Wallace L. Lind and saw all the major naval battles in the South Pacific and was in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the treaty ending World War II. The destroyer never touched land for over 18 months.

When he returned from military duty, he married Marilyn Ritter on November 26, 1947. He farmed in the Talmage, Brock, and Burr areas for over 50 years. During this time, he also followed the Midwestern wheat harvest brigade for over 25 years. His crews harvested wheat from Oklahoma to South Dakota. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, where he was confirmed in 1936 by Rev. G.E. Seybold and served in many capacities with the church. He was Past Commander of the Talmage American Legion Post 246; Chef de Gare of the 40 & 8, and a member of the Elks and Eagles. He also served as the International Supreme Counselor of United Commercial Travelers. And he was an avid Husker fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, in April of 2000, his mother, father, sister, Merlyn Arends and nephews, Dick and Daniel Arends. He is survived by his son, Don and wife Kathy Wittler of Omaha, NE, his daughter Pam and husband Tom Stichweh, of Kansas City, MO, his grandson Will and wife Carrie Wittler of Talmage, NE, his granddaughter Jyl and husband Ritchie Brown of Omaha, NE, and his grandson Michael Stichweh of Kansas City, MO, other survivors include great-grandchildren, Ethan and Macy Wittler of Talmage, NE, his sister Arlene Fleischer of Lincoln, NE, his nephews families, Deb Arends, David and Connie Arends, Kathleen, Darcy, and Kelsey Arends, all of Lincoln, NE, many other relatives and friends.
