When Accident Occurred
A.K. Smith, an employee of the Homestake Mining company, died this morning at 5 o'clock at the hospital yesterday with fatal injuries the result of blasting while he was at work on the ditch on the Spearfish.
Smith has no relatives in Lead or in the west. His home is in New York. He was 27 years of age.
Black Hills Daily Register newspaper, November 25, 1910 - "A.E. (sic) Smith, the man who was blasted at Camp No. 3 of the Homestake Mining company, on the Spearfish ditch, died at the county hospital early this morning. As near as can be learned, Smith in company with the other men working with him, set off a blast, and after they heard the report, Smith returned to the place there they had set it off, and seeing a stick of dynamite lying on the ground, picked it up. The dynamite exploded, and the man was so badly blasted that he died as a result of the wounds he received. He was taken to the county hospital in this city, where he was taken care of until death relieved his suffering. No funeral arrangements have as yet been made, owing to the difficulty of hearing from the relatives of the dead man.
Black Hills Daily Register, November 26, 1910 - The funeral of the late A.K. Smith, the man who was blasted on the Spearfish ditch, was held this afternoon and interment was made in the South Lead cemetery.
