RCAF Flight Sergeant John ("Jack") Balfour Gray was killed during a mine-laying operation. He is buried in Doncaster Rose Hill Cemetery, England, grave G. 63; he was the first Nelson man killed during WW2. See Flight Sergeant ( W.Op./Air Gnr. ) John Balfour Gray for more information.

Grays Peak at the south end of Kootenay Glacier Provincial park is named for Gray and his brother Robert Hampton Gray, who was the last Nelson man killed during WW2.
