LAKE PARK -- Mrs. Gillis, 78, of Lake Park, NC, passed away Monday, January 1, 2012, at Lake Park Nursing Home.
A loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a loving and caring friend, Mrs. Gillis was born on January 16, 1933, in Norwood, NC, to Charlie Baxter Tyson and Ottie Holt Tyson.
Mrs. Gillis was a retired surgical technician who had worked at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in the areas of labor and delivery and pediatrics.
She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday school class. Mrs. Gillis was a Master Gardener and was happiest when she could spend time working in her yard. She always loved sharing her plants and flowers with her family and friends.
Martha is survived by her husband of thirty-nine years, Ted, Lake Park, NC; six children, Patty (David) Wise, Matthews; Donna (Mike) Bass, Monroe; Ted Gillis, Jr. (Leisa), Indian Trail; Sandra (Randy) Crews, Estel, SC; and Lynn Gillis, Monroe; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Ann Huneycutt.
Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC. Her funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the Sardis Baptist Church, 3602 Unionville-Indian Trail West, Indian Trail, NC. Reverend Kenn Hucks will officiate. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
The family wishes to thank Lake Park Nursing Home staff and Palliative Care for all their kindness and the excellent care they provided for Mrs. Gillis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Sardis Baptist Church or to the Special Olympics Mecklenburg County, 4421 Stuart Andrew Blvd., Suite 605, Charlotte, NC 28217.
