1887 History of Jay County

Entry for John H Christman:

"John H. Christman, of Bear Creek Township, was born October 24, 1856, upon the farm where he now resides. His father, J. V. Christman was one of the early pioneers of Jay County. He was born in Germany and came to America when a young man, locating in Ohio, where he married Miss Aba Schurr, born in Germany. In 1841, the Christman family came to this county, settling in Bear Creek Township. Here he cultivated and improved his land until it became one of the best farms in the township. They reared seven children, six of whom are now living -- Sarah P., Adam, George W., John H., Eliza and Elizabeth (twins). The father died January 13, 1873, at the old homestead; the mother is still living.

John H was reared a farmer, his youth being spent in working the old homestead farm. He was married November 24, 1878, to Miss Jenie Alexander, of Wayne Township, and daughter of Alfred Alexander, a prominent citizen of Jay County. Mr. Christman owns seventy acres of good land which is in a good state of cultivation. It is situated on Pike road, five miles north of Portland, and on-half mile south of Briant. He has a fine two-story brick residence, and other good farm buildings. Mr. and Mrs. Christman are the parents of two children -- Ethel Maude and Alfred Golden."
