Elizabeth H. McLaughlin, of Sedalia, died Nov 6, 2003, at Sylvia G Thompson Residence Center.
She was born Jan 11, 1914, in Sedalia, a daughter of Edward Hart and Maud Miller McLaughlin.
Miss McLaughlin was raised and educated in Sedalia. She graduated from Smith-Cotton High School and Central Missouri State University. She taught art in Sedalia elementary schools, until she left for Washington, DC, in 1941. She was a cryptographer for the US Army Signal Corps, where she made charts showing the flow of Japanese messages. She joined the American Red Cross in 1945, working as a hospital field director. She retired in 1979. She worked in military hospitals in China, India, North Africa, Japan, Korea, Germany, England and France, as well as several military bases in the United States.
During her Red Cross career, she was known for her compassion. She dealt with several patients, including Elvis Presley. She also met General Douglas MacArthur. She brought Christmas to servicemen and hospital personnel all over the world for 23 years. She returned to Sedalia and volunteered for the Pettis County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a volunteer in charge of services to the military for 15 years. She was a longtime Red Cross board member. She also served as an interim station manager for the Red Cross at Whiteman Air Force Base, when there was a need. She was a member of Sorosis and Calvary Episcopal Church.
Surviving are a niece, Mary Elizabeth "Libbie" Randels, of Oregon, IL, formerly of Sedalia; and four nephews, George Cain, of Saratoga Springs, NY, formerly of Sedalia, John McLaughlin, of Glendale, AZ, Robert McLaughlin, of Parker, CO, and Douglas McLaughlin, of Basalt, CO.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Louise Cain; and her twin brother, George McLaughlin.
