JOHN B. LEMMER
PASSED AWAY SUNDAY

Another of Marathon's most prominent and early pioneers was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetary on the south side hill Wednesday forenoon.

John B. Lemmer passed away at the home of his son Joseph W. Lemmer in the village Sunday morning at 7:40 o'clock, death being chiefly due to general debility and old age.

Deceased was born in Wintersdorf near Treves (Trier) Germany, Nov. 9, 1846. In 1856 he came with his parents to the United States living for about five years at La Porte, Ind. In 1859 they emigrated to Wisconsin, making the trip in a prairie schooner drawn by oxen.

In 1871 he was married to Rosa Eisenmann at Marathon. Their matrimonial union was a most happy one and was blessed with eleven children, nine of whom are still living to mourn the loss of their beloved father, viz: Dr. George N. Lemmer, Spooner, Wis., Joseph, Anton, Leonard, Caroline and Katherine of Marathon, Albert of Wausau, Paul of Lake Side, Ore., and Elizabeth, now Mrs. L. F. Langenberg of Roseburg, Ore.

After his marriage he lived on his farm in the town of Marathon for about 30 years, then sold his farm and moved to Roseburg, Ore., where he purchased a fruit farm, residing there two years, and returned to Wisconsin and again purchased a farm in the town of Marathon where he resided until he retired and moved to this village. His wife died June 14, 1919.

His life was full of adventure. In the early sixties and seventies his name was prominent among the log drivers and lumber rafting on the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers, floating many million feet of Wis. pine lumber to St. Louis and other southern points. He converted a primeval forest into a farm and knew every phase of pioneer life. Always. cheerful and of a happy disposition, he was a man of keen intellect, a very entertaining conversationalist, generous, broadminded, kind hearted, ever willing to lend a helping hand to those who were in affliction or want. He loved outdoor life, was particularly interested in pant and tree culture, established three good seed orchards and was a specialist in pruning and grafting fruit and shade trees, shrubbery, etc. It must be mentioned also that he loved the birds dearly; knew every species, kept an exact chart of the arriva1 of the principal birds in spring and their departure in fall.

Deceased was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wis., which society attended the funeral in a body. The pallbearers were Henry Heil, Chas. Trauba, John Opperman, Joseph Steibur, Frank Knoeck, Win. Volhard.

Two brothers survive the deceased;. Mike Lemmer of Oceanside, California and Nep Lemmer of Marathon. His surviving sisters are Mrs. Joe Blume, Sr., Mrs. Mary Fischer, Mrs. Augustus Vetter, and Mrs. Priscilla Vetter.

His Funeral was was one of the largest ---
