Murder Victim. He was the heir to the Hanover Banking fortune, a leading figure in horse racing circles, and the only son of Elsie Cryder Woodward, a "grande dame" of New York Society. He was shot and killed by his wife, Ann, who claimed she thought he was a prowler. His mother and most of his friends believed Ann killed him on purpose, because he was about to leave her. Ann was never charged with his murder as her mother-in-law stood behind her, in hopes of saving the family from scandal. His story was recounted in Truman Capote's novel, "Answered Prayers," Dominick Dunne's novel "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles," and the non-fiction book "This Crazy Thing Called Love: The Golden World and Fatal Marriage of Ann and Billy Woodward" by Susan Braudy.
