Daughter of LT Ulysses Grant Kemp and Frances Polk Kemp. Second wife of G. Hall Roosevelt (1891-1941); divorced in 1937. Until the divorce, sister-in-law to Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962). Mother of Amy (1925-1992), Diana (1927-1998), and Janet Roosevelt (1930-2020).

Active in Michigan Democratic politics-Dorothy Kemp Roosevelt was the first woman to win a Democratic Congressional primary in Michigan-she was the defeated candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives in 1942. Running against Republican incumbent George Anthony Dondero (1883-1968) in a heavily Republican Congressional District (No. 17), she lost 56.8% to 43.2%. Member of the War Production Board in Detroit, specializing in women workers problems in war industries. A classical pianisst, Dorothy Kemp Roosevelt studied at the Fontainbieu School of Music in France. Dorothy was an accomplished pianist. She played at the White House when F.D.R. was president.
