He was born March 25, 1921, in york Alabama, a son of Nathaniel and Welthenia McElroy Cooper. His father died in 1923 and his mother later married Grey Artis in 1925. Brother Cooper came to Youngstown in 1946. He retired in 1981 as a bricklayer helper for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co, where he was employed for 35 years.
He was a member of the Church, was past treasurer and member of the Masonic Harvest Lodge 26, and was a member of the NAACP. He was an army veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife, the former A. Beatrice Woolen, whom he married August 11, 1948, he leaves a son, Alfred B of Youngstown, seven sisters Mrs Liza Fisher (JT) Mrs Eartha Terrell (Purvis) and Mrs Louise Walker all of Youngstown. Mrs Jewell Knox (LT) Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs Christine Jones Detroit, Michigan, Mrs Bertha Bradley (Willie) Madison, Illinois and Mrs Lula B Merchant Columbus, Ohio; three brothers Thomas, Robert and Gabriel Artis all of younstown; six grandchildren Mrs Althea Cooper McMeans, Curtis B , Alfred D, Love S, Coleman A and Annie B Cooper. 2 great grandsons and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
