Merle I. Hamilton, 81, died Aug. 26, 2004, at his home.


He was born in Whittier, Calif., April 1, 1923, the son of Ernest and Christine (Fogg) Hamilton. He came to Lebanon, N.H., as a child and grew up in the Upper Valley.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. Following discharge, he returned to Lebanon and was married to Florence Thibodeau in November of 1947.

He was employed as a mechanic by Knight's Garage in Lebanon before purchasing the Jenney Station on Hanover Street in Lebanon, which he owned and operated until June of 1969. He was later employed by the State of Vermont Department of Corrections in Windsor, and later in South Burlington, retiring in 1985.

He served two terms on the Lebanon City Council and one term as assistant mayor. He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors of Vermont and V.F.W. of Burlington.

Besides his wife, of South Burlington, Family members include seven children, Larry Hamilton of Plymouth, N.H., Dennis Hamilton of Lebanon, Martha Curtis of Keene, N.H., John Hamilton of Lebanon, Brian Hamilton of Knob Noster, Mo., Teresa Smith of Burlington, and David Hamilton Sr. of Georgia; three brothers, Ernest Hamilton of Concord, N.H., George Willette of Virginia and Wayne Willette of Jordan, N.Y.; one sister, Beverley Giggey of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Ricker Funeral Home, Lebanon.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Lebanon. Burial will follow in Valley Cemetery.
