Gottfried was born in Paris, South Russia. He married Lydia Biech in Russia, and in 1893 they came to America. They lived some time in Tripp, South Dakota. They later moved to Stark County, North Dakota and made their home in Hebron. During the hard times, many of the children moved to Montana, and so it came to be that Gottfried and Lydia sought out a new home one mile from the city of Billings. At the time of his death, he had 4 sons, 7 daughters, 47 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Two of his children had predeceased him.
