Illness which the infirmities of age could not withstand, caused the death of John Grumann of this city Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Hess, Cavour, Wis., where he was spending the winter.

Deceased, a native of Witte, Silesia, Germany, where he was born 85 years ago, was a resident of this city since 1872 when he came from overseas with his wife who preceded him in death nine years. He entered the German Army as a young man, and was called to fight in two wars, one between Austria and Germany and the other with France in 1870. After the war he and his family, consisting of his wife and two children, came to America.

Mr. Grumann leaves his daughter, Mrs. Mary Hess of Cavour and six sons; Fred of Cavour, Ed, William, and Albert of Leona, John of Milwaukee, and Stephen of this city.

The body was brought to this city for Interment at Calvary cemetery and rested at the home of his son, Stephen from where the funeral was held on Wednesday morning with services at St. Luke's church.

The funeral of John Gruman, Sr., who died at the home of his son, Albert Gruman at Laona, Wisc., was held from St. Luke’s church at 9 o’clock this morning. Rev. C. V. Hugo officiating. Mr. Gruman, who, had reached the ripe old age of 84 years, is survived by six son, Stephen of this city, William, John, Jr. Albert and Edward of Milwaukee, Fred of Cavour, Wis., and one daughter, Mrs. Marie Hess of Cavour. Johann was the son of Johann and Elizabeth (Heckel) Grumman.

He was born at Polnisch Wette, Neisse district, Upper Silesia (Ober-Schlesien), Germany.

Johann was orphaned at the age of 13 when his mother died in August 1855 at Polnisch Wette, Neisse district, Upper Silesia (Ober-Schlesien).

Johann was christened at Polnisch (Polish) Wette (now Polski Swietow, Poland), Schlesien (Silesia), Prussia 29 January 1842; died at Cavour, Forest Co., Wisconsin, Sunday 19 December 1926, aged 85, at the home of his daughter; was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin Wednesday, 22 December 1926 [His Obituary, Two Rivers Reporter, Fri. 24 December 1926, Page 1, Col. 3; Two Rivers Bur. Johann married at Polnisch Wette, Schlesien, Prussia 11 February 1868 Marie R. KOENIG (KONIG) [IGI; 1900 U.S. Census, microfilm].

Johann served the German Army in the Austro-Prussian War in June-July 1866 and in Franco-Prussia War in 1870-1871. Johann and Marie resided at Ober-Schlesien, Germany, in 1871 [Her Obituary].

Following her father’s death in about 1865, John and Mary immigrated to the U.S. in June 1872 along with her mother and six of Mary’s siblings and their families. John sailed from Bremen, Germany, and arrived at the Port of New York, on 10 June 1872 on the S.S. Schmidt [Naturalization Intention, dated 31 October 1874, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin; New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957]. His occupation in the passenger list is listed as shoe-maker. The Konig family is listed as Magdalena, 52, Anna, 22, Mathilda, 16, Joseph, 14, Bertha, 8, Emilie, 7. Maria, 26, came separately, with daughter Marie, 3, and sister Martha Konig, 24, on 25 June 1872, on the S. S. Hansa [New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957].

They settled at Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin. There, her younger brother, Joseph KOENIG, reached prominence as of one of the founders of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Co. (now Mirro), the largest employer in Two Rivers. His obituary lists his birthplace as near Neisse, Germany, in April 1858. Neisse is located along the German-Poland border.

John, Mary, and three of their sons, Stephen, Fred, and William, were enumerated on Mishicott Road, Two Rivers Township, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin [1900 US Census]. Eight of their fourteen children were living in 1900. John, a farmer, and Mary had been married for 32 years.

In 1905 Johann and Marie rented a house in Two Rivers when their son Stephen resided with them [1905 State Census].

Johann and Marie resided on Monroe Street, Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin in 1910 [1910 U.S. Census].

John, a widower, was enumerated at 2711 Monroe St., Two Rivers in 1920, occupation timekeeper in a factory [1920 US Census; 1920 Manitowoc Co. Dir., p. 380].

Several of their adult children moved to Cavour, Forest Co., Wisconsin circa 1907.

Johan had at least one sister and two brothers: Amalia Ottila, born at Markersdorf on 11 Mar. 1840, Julius Ignatz, born at Markersdorf on 21 July 1844, and Albert, born at Markersdorf in 1846. Amalia resided at Loval, Clark Co., Wisconsin, Julius resided at Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin, where Amalia and her husband first lived when them moved to Wisconsin, but Albert remained in Germany.
