Charles Robert "Bob" Shields, 82, went to be with the Lord on November 7, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born in Hobgood, NC, on June 2, 1928.

Raised in Scotland Neck, NC, he graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Architectural Engineering. After college, he was hired by the US Army Corps of Engineers for the design team of Kerr Dam.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged from the Air Force Reserves as a Captain.

He was a registered architect and partner in Shields-Wyatt Architects in Rocky Mount, NC. He was a member of the Eastern Section of the NC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and had served as Section President,.

While in Rocky Mount, he was active at First Baptist Church, serving as deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher and President of the Baptist Men.

In the Rocky Mount community, he was a Rotarian, served a year as the President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, and President of the NC State Baptist Convention for one year. Bob and his wife, Burton, co-owned The Store House, a mini-storage facility in Rocky Mount.

The people of the little nation of Moldova were a passion of his for over twenty years. He visited the country many times leading teams of Christians from several different churches. They worked with Moldovan churches, orphanages, and villages, providing humanitarian materials and sharing the Gospel as they worked among the people of Moldova.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cecil Shields of Scotland Neck, NC., his brother, John Shields and his sister Betty Lou Shields, both of Asheboro, NC, and his grandson, Jordan Shields Morris, of Rocky Mount, NC.

Bob is survived by his wife of sixty years, the former Sarah Burton Clark, of Scotland Neck, NC, a daughter, Millie Shields Morris and husband, John Robert Morris, of Red Oak, NC, a son, Robert Burton Shields and wife, Melinda Gale Shields, of Kansas City, KS, a son, Bradford Leon Shields, Sr. and his wife, Kimberly Flora Shields, of Boone, NC.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Burton Edward Morris of Durham, NC., Bradford Leon Shields, Jr. and Sarah Joyner Shields of Raleigh, NC, Meredith Joy Shields of Boone, NC, Jessica Gale Shields, Amy Elizabeth Shields, and Robert Harrington Shields, of Kansas City, KS.

The celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Boone, N.C. with the Rev. Allan K. Blume officiating.

Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck, NC.
