He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lyons, formerly of Newark, whom he married in 1945; and his four children: Jim (Madeleine), Jan Wilson Baker (Shag Baker), Bill (Tracye) and Kevin (Debbie). He had 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom live in South Jersey. McCusker was born in Verona in 1915, the son of Irish immigrants. In World War II, he served as a class director in Medical Field Service Schools and became a Captain in the Medical Service Corp. After the War, he remained in the Army Reserve where he served until his retirement in 1969 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
McCusker spent his entire professional career with the Prudential Insurance Company at which he started in Newark in 1934 after attending Seton Hall University. In 1958, he was the first Prudential manager sent to open Prudential's new operations in Linwood. He rose to General Manager of the Linwood office and retired at age 62.
McCusker was an outstanding athlete as a youth and young adult. He was the New Jersey backstroke champion, a U.S. Olympics swimming finalist, and an award-winning rower with the Verona Canoe Club. He was also an avid golfer his entire life. For years, he enjoyed the comradery of his golfing buddies at Green Tree Country Club, where he "shot his age" many times during a period that spanned three decades. "The Colonel" was well-known for using his management skills to organize numerous golfing trips, tournaments and charitable fundraisers.
McCusker served as Secretary of the Linwood Planning Board for ten years and also served on the city's Board of Adjustment.
McCusker was a devout Catholic and served in a number of key leadership capacities at St. Joseph's and Our Lady of Sorrows parishes in Somers Point and Linwood, respectively. He was a Eucharistic Minister and established the Perpetual Adoration program at Our Lady of Sorrows. Throughout his life, he was devoted to and involved with numerous charities including the St. Jude Children's Hospital, the Disabled American Veterans, Catholic Missions, Hospice, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Boys Scouts, the Knights of Columbus, and Linwood athletic programs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Poplar and Wabash Aves in Linwood on Monday, June 25 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at the Atlantic County Veterans' Cemetery, State Hwy North 50, in Estell Manor.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Sunday, June 24, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Middleton-Stroble & Zale Funeral Home at 304 Shore Road in Somers Point.
