Henry was born 20 Nov 1877 in Coryell County, Texas to Albert Henry Allen 1837 – and Mary Ann (Payne) 1839 – 1891. His headstone seems to indicate that the year was 1872 but that is not the case. Family censuses gathered clearly demonstrate he was born in 1877, which implies that Henry knew but perhaps his offspring didn't.

The first record we have of Henry is the 1880 United States Federal Census: IN SUMMARY:

Henry shows up in the 1887 and 1889 Washington State Censuses whit his family in Roslyn, WA.

THe 1890 Federal Census burned in a fire in 1921 so nothing is available to refer to then.

We have not located a 1900 Census with Henry's name on it to date. HE would have been approximately 23 at the time and presumably single.

The next time we appear to hear from Henry is a Montana Marriage:

Henry and Hilda have started their family here. It's interesting to note that Henry appears to believe that his parents, both whom are believed to have passed by this time, were born in the same state the he was, Texas. That is simply not the case, but it is probably the place of hi earliest memory. Henry is only 33 here and with both parents having passed by this time it is easy to understand his belief.

In 1920 we find Henry and wife Hilda have added Alma D to the family since the last census. She is 10 years junior to older brother Harry. Another new addition from the 1910 census is the appearance of 18 year old Fredric W Allen. He is believed to be Hilda's son from her first marriage, but that doesn't explain why he was absent in the 1910 census. In the census Fredrick is listed as Henry's "Step Son". More information can be obtained about Fredrick on his Find A Grave site.

The family has moved from the gold mining town of Maiden, MT , which eventually becomes a "ghost town", to Miles City, MT and Henry lives his life out there.

Another interesting note is that Henry now believes that his father, born in Missouri, is now from Ireland!

Here we find the Allen's with their two daughters. Elma is actually Alma D. and is now 12. Harry has joined the military service and is in San Diego for the 1930 census. Henry now apparently has returned to the belief that his parents were both born in Texas again or that he no longer wished to be thought of as Irish.

Montana, Death Index, 1860-2007 for Henry Allen

Name: Henry Allen
Event: Death
Event Date: 17 Nov 1957
Event Place: Silver Bow, Montana
Gender:
Age: 72
Marital Status: Divorced
Estimated Birth Year: 1885
SSN:
Record County: Silver Bow
Record Year: 0
Index Number: 177

It appears that Henry didn't talk much about the year of his birth because on his death certificate he is believed to be born in 1885. Hilda had passed 6 years prior to Henry, in 1951. Since Henry was not available to answer the question himself, it is presumed that one of his children did it for him. Apparently one of the other children had the headstone completed with the year 1872 as the birth year on it. Apparently Henry either appeared old or younger to some people rather than his age.
