Laramie Boomerang, Laramie, Wyoming - January 2011 - Abbie May Montgomery Current, 89, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, in Longmont, Colorado. She was born August 5, 1921, to Ralph and Alma Montgomery in Scottsburg, Indiana. She grew up in Daleville, Indiana. She graduated from Daleville High School in 1939. She married Frances B. Current, on August 23, 1942. While he deployed as a commissioned officer to Normandy, she graduated in 1953 with a double major in fine arts and home economics from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Shortly after graduation, she taught high school home economics for two years. After the end of World War II and following the birth of her children, David and Chri, the couple relocated to Oregon. In 1951, they moved to Rawlins, where he was superintendent of schools. During the years they lived in Rawlins, she pursued her drawing and painting and worked in ceramics. The family moved to Laramie in August 1957. He taught middle school while she continued her artwork both in her home studio and at the University of Wyoming graphics arts department. She did scientific illustrations for texts, dissertations, and publications. She did commercial art for businesses in Laramie. She produced original pen and ink drawings and prints. Her studies in fashion design inspired her needlework and sewing. Over the years, she collected antique dolls and took her art in a different direction restoring and costuming dolls for collectors and museums throughout the United States and Europe. She restored nearly 3,000 dolls before her retirement in 2008. She spent her last three years at Sterling House Assisted Living in Longmont. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her son, David A. Current, of Blackhawk, Colorado; her daughter, Cheri Current Raab, of Port Townsend, Washington; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will take place in the spring in Laramie. The time and place will be announced at a later date.
