On August 28, 1879 she married James Speed, a lawyer, son of James Speed, Attorney General under President Lincoln. They were married at St. Catherines, Lincoln, Ontario. Lucien Quigley and Joshua Speed were witnesses.
Hattie had three children:
Ellen "Nellie" Morton Speed (June 24, 1881 - August 8, 1957)
Harriet "Hallie" Quigley Speed (March 12, 1883 - July 3, 1958)
Jack Speed ( August 1885 - September 1885)
Hattie died of meningitis at 38 on June 23, 1897 and was buried in the Quigley family plot in Cave Hill Cemetery the next day. She had written her will on May 12, 1892 and it was proved on July 7, 1897.
