PRATHER
John Preston Prather, son of Philo and Mary Jane Etter Prather, was born in Monroe County near Melrose, Iowa August 5, 1891 and passed away at the Chariton Manor Dec. 20, 1982 at the age of 91. His entire life was spent near Russell in the Bethel Community.
He loved the great out of doors, the farm and he died custom farm work for others.
On November 26, 1924 he united in marriage with Bessie May Brewer and they remained in the Bethel area until February 1978 when they moved to the Chariton Manor because of ill health.
Two daughters and three sons were born to this union. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie, his parents and one brother, Isaac.
He leaves to mourn his passing three sons: Jack Prather and wife Frances of Russell, Bob Prather and wife Donna of Chariton, and Doug Prather and wife Marcia of Russell; two daughters, Mary Boyce of Des Moines and Evelyn Kent and husband Vernon of Chariton, seven grandsons, 12 granddaughters and 13 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Wauneta Brewer of Chariton and Nellie Payne of Grand Rapids, Wis. and many other relatives and friends.
He was a man of many talents, a loving father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed by those who knew him.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 1982 at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Wauneita McConnell and the Rev. Father Eugene Hoenig officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
