Martin homesteaded near Fort Morgan. The family lived on that land for several years, but when wife, Frances became ill Martin purchased a home in Fort Morgan in order to be near doctors. After her death he continued to live in the home in town, later selling the homesteaded land. After selling the land Martin became janitor for the Morgan County Courthouse, a job he retired from.
Shortly before Martin's death he agreed to travel to Rock Springs, Wyoming to visit daughter Mable. Before leaving he made all of his children agree that should he die while on the visit his body be returned to Fort Morgan to be buried near his two wives. He did die in Rock Springs and his daughters made sure he as buried in Fort Morgan.
