Bernard Wierda, 70, of Sioux Center died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at a Mesa, Ariz, hospital.
Services were held at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Joel Bensma officiated. Burial was in Memory Garden Cemetery under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home.
Bernard was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Sioux Center, the son of Martin and Rena (Faber) Wierda. He attended Sioux Center schools where he was active in basketball.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 653rd Field Artillery from 1952-54.
He married Frieda Meade on July 2,1955, in Ashland, Ky.
He received his diploma in interior design from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1956. He was employed with Montgomery Wards in Chicago from 1956-1989.
The couple lived in Chicago, Villa Park and Wheaton, Ill., before moving to Sioux Center in 1989. Mr. Wierda was a member of Ridgeview Development Group, Central Reformed Church and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers and their wives, Reynold and Peggy and Marvin and Lorraine, all of Sioux
Center; three sisters and their husbands, Delia and Henry Franken and Martha and John Van Roekel, all of Sioux Center and Myrtle and Clarence Kiel of Orange City; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Louis Wierda of Sioux Center and Mrs. Tom Wierda of Orange City.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis, George and Tom; two sisters, Jane Eva Duits and Henrietta Parsonson; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Duits and Bill Parsonson.
