BROWN - August 10th, 1907, at Balnagowan, Upper Rathmines, Vere Ward Brown, second son of the late Hugh Brown, "entered into rest" aged 57 years. Funeral from his late residence, 9 o'clock, to-morrow (Tuesday) morning, for Mount Jerome. No flowers, by request.

Son of Hugh Brown, one of the founders of Brown Thomas & Co., of Grafton Street, Dublin.

Vere Ward Brown, son of Hugh Brown and Mary Anne Brown, of 7, Leinster Road, Dublin, born on 13th August 1849, was baptised at St. Peter's Church, Aungier Street, Dublin, on 18th September 1849.
Hugh Brown was described as "a Draper".

Marriage
Vere Ward Brown, a bachelor, a Merchant, from Oakland, Rathgar, Dublin, son of Hugh Brown, Merchant, J.P., and Eleanor Swift Deverell, a minor, a spinster, from Drumbar, daughter of Frederick George Deverell, a Civil Engineer, were married on 3 October 1877, at Drumbar Parish Church, Cavan.
The witnesses were
Frederick G. Deverell,
Hugh Brown.

In the 1901 census, the Brown family were recorded at Palmerston Park, Dublin.
present were,
Vere Ward Brown, aged 51, a J.P. for County Dublin, a County Councillor, a Merchant, married, born in Co. Dublin.
Eleanor Swift Brown, his wife, aged 42, married, born in Co. Mayo
Vere Ward Brown, son, aged 21, a Lieutenant- Dublin Fusiliers.
Lionel Persse Brown, son, aged 12, a Scholar, born in Co. Dublin.
Eleanor Yeats, a visitor, and 4 domestic staff were also present
A Cook, a house maid, a parlour maid, and a general domestic servant.

No member of the Brown family was recorded in the 1911 census of Ireland.

His son, Captain Frederick George Brown born in 1881, died at Tanga, Tanganyka, East Africa, in WW1.

In a listing for 1932, Lionel Persse Brown was living at "Lyndhurst", Bicton, Shropshire.
He was noted as the author of "The Price of Wisdom", a 3 act play.

A descendant relative has provided some of the following information.
Vere Ward Brown, OBE, MC, son of Vere Ward Brown and Eleanor Swift Deverell was born on 17 January 1880, at Oatlands Villas, Rathgar, Dublin, and died at Sheffield, England, in October 1960.
Captain [Acting Major] Vere Ward Brown MC was gazetted an OBE on 1 January 1919.

He enlisted in the 45th [Dublin] Company, 13th Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry, and served in South Africa as 9667 Private Vere Ward Brown during the Boer War [1899-1901]. He appears to have been promoted relatively quickly, as by March 1901, he was back in Dublin, recorded in the census as a Lieutenant in the R.D.F.

Vere Ward Brown (Jnr) was married twice.
His first wife was Barbara Dacre Vardene Price, [b. 1882] whom he married in 1906. They were divorced in 1919.
His second wife was Jessie Jennings, [b. 1900] whom he married in 1921.
