FUNERAL OF MRS. JOHN O. BAILEY HELD SUNDAY ONE TIME EDITOR OF COURIER Resident Here for Many Years' Passed Away in White Plains, Dec. 31, Aged 87. Resident Here for Many Years Passed Away in White Plains, Dec. 31, Aged 87. Funeral services for Mrs. John O. Bailey, who, died in White Plains on Thursday night of last week, Dec. 31, 1925, were held at the Baptist church in this village on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock and attended by many of the older residents who were personally acquainted with her when she lived in Carmel as well as friends of the family. The service was conducted by Rev. A.I. Ehle pastor of the church. The body was placed in the receiving vault in Raymond Hill cemetery and in the spring will be taken to the New Vernon cemetery connected with the Old School Baptist Church at New Vernon, Orange county, near Middletown and laid to rest beside her son, Robert Little, as was her request. The deceased was Miss Mary Virginia Beebe a daughter of Elder, and Mrs. Gilbert Beebe and was born at Middletown, N.Y., on Oct 25, 1838. She was a sister of Hon. George M. Beebe, of Sullivan county who served as governor of Kansas, a member of Congress and judge of the Court of Claims of New York. When seventeen years old she became the wife of the late James D. Little, their marriage taking place Aug. 28, 1854. Mr. Little was editor and owner of the Putnam County Courier at that time and they came to Carmel to live and were residents here until Mr. Little's death in 1883, when they lived in Kansas where Mr. Little was admitted to the bar and was engaged in the legal profession with his brother-in-law, Mr. Beebe. Mr. and Mrs. Little maintained one of the most hospitable homes in Carmel and having several children it was the scene of many social gatherings during the many years they lived here. After Mr. Little's death in 1883, his daughter, the late Mrs. Annie C. Cole, took the editorial chair until 1885 when the management of the newspaper was conducted by Mrs. Little. She was an unusually bright woman, well-educated and conversant with all the problems of her day and her editorials' brought much favorable comment from the newspaper fraternity as well as the metropolitan dailies. In the early nineties she sold the paper to the present owner and retired from active work. She served as postmistress of Carmel during the first Cleveland administration. Some years after, Mr. Little's death, Mrs. Little married the late John O. Bailey, of, Kent Cliffs, father of Miss Pamelia Bailey, of Carmel, and resided there until his death when she went to Middletown to live and about ten years ago having passed the three score and ten years of her life went to White Plains to be near her children. Although, 87 years old Mrs. Little remained remarkably well and active. During December she contracted a cold from which she had apparently recovered when on Monday of last week she began to fail quite rapidly and her death followed on Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Noble Jerome. Funeral services were held at her daughter's home Saturday afternoon at four o'clock. Dr. Roland C. Ormsbee, rector of St. Bartholemew's Episcopal church, of White Plains, officiated, but the Episcopal service was not followed. Miss Helen Clymer a former teacher of the Noble School conducted by Mrs. Jerome, and who was a close friend of Mrs. Bailey, sang: "Face to Face" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Mrs. Bailey was the mother of eight children, three of whom survive. They are Mrs. Florien Root, of Scarsdale, and Mrs. Nellie V. Camp and Mrs. Kathleen N. Jerome, of White Plains, the five children who are dead were Mrs. Annie Cole, Evelyn Little, James, Albert and Robert Little, the latter of whom was the last of the family to reside in Carmel. — THE PUTNAM COUNTY COURIER, CARMEL, N.Y., Friday Afternoon, January 8, 1926.
