Civil War Union Army officer. He mustered in at Philadelphia as a Captain in Company E of the 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, originally known as the 3rd California and later as the "The Fire Zouave Regiment", on August 10, 1861. He was promoted to Assistant Adjutant-General of Volunteers, May 15, 1863. He was later breveted to Lieutenant-colonel.

He later wrote a history, A History of the Philadelphia Brigade: 69th, 71st, 72nd, and the 106th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1876.

At the time of his death, he was occupied as a bank president.
