Max H. "Sam" Fortney, 85, of Sterling, Va., formerly of Keyser and Rowlesburg, W.Va., died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Hospice Center, Arlington, Va.
Born on June 27, 1918, at Blazer, W.Va., he was a son of the late Verner and Minnie (Wolfe) Fortney.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Williame M. "Billie" (Kimble) Fortney, on June 2, 2003, and by six brothers and two sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Fortney was a retired tax auditor for the State of West Virginia. He was a 1936 graduate of Rowlesburg High School, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Keyser. Over the years, he and his wife were actively involved with various veterans' organizations and he was proud of his military service. Mr. Fortney enjoyed making "string art" and his numerous creations are displayed in several public places.

Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Braithwood and her companion, Frank Godwin, of Sterling; two sons, Jim Fortney and his wife, Deborah, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and John Fortney, of Berkeley, Calif.; one grandson, Ryan Fortney, of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, May 31, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday, June 1 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Gordon T. Humphreys officiating. Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
