Obituary from The Rhinelander Daily News newspaper dated Monday, October 29, 1923:

Mrs. Winifred Ernestine Smith, one of the oldest residents of Rhinelander and Oneida county, passed away at 11:45 o'clock Sunday morning of a complication of diseases. The late Mrs. Smith had been ailing for several years.

Deceased was born in Germany in 1876 and came to Rhinelander about thirty-five years ago. Mrs. Smith was well known in Rhinelander. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. W. Wenzel, three sisters, Mrs. Lewis Kelley, Mrs. Fred Gropengieser, Mrs. Otto Krantz, two brothers, August and William Wenzel, one niece and six nephews, all of Rhinelander.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Gropengieser residence, 545 West Davenport street. Interment to be made in Forest Home cemetery. Relatives are expected here from nearby towns and from Minnesota for the funeral.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Winifred Ernestine Smith, who passed away Sunday morning, were held from the home of Mrs. Fred Gropengieser, 545 West Davenport street, sister of the deceased, at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Reverend H. W. Schmitt of the Zion Lutheran church officiated. Interment was made in the Forest Home cemetery. The pallbearers were B. N. Moran, William Trotier, Jr., Herbert Habiger, of Rhinelander, William Mistley, William Haase and William Webster, of Enterprise.
