Ulysses Lewis-First Mayor of Columbus-1829

When Columbus was a small, isolated tradig post way back yonder in the early part of the nineteenth century, when Indians were as familiar to the settlers as negroes are to the present inhabitants of the city, a strong man rose among his fellow men and was by unanimous consent declared leader of the post by the hardy settlers of the little post.

A leader, a man who could do things at the opportune moment was needed by these men, who though accustomed to the hardships and privations of the primordial forests, needed a guiding hand to direct the small affairs of the post, to see that no encroachments were made by outsiders – and Ulysses Lewis, grandfather of John A. Lewis of this city, was elected by popular vote to the position of "intendant," the highest office the hardy settlers could honor him with. An intendant held the reins of government of a community with the same sway as did the mayor of larger municipalities in those days....

born in Jefferson Co., Ga., on the 7th day of Feb'y A. D. 1799.
died on Russell Co., ALa., on the 8th day of Aug. A. D. 1856.

He was a direct descendant of Fielding Lewis and his wife Betty Washington Lewis, a sister of George Washington who lived at Fredericksburg VA in the historic home, KENMORE which they built. He was the first Intendant or Mayor of Columbus Ga., during the year 1829.
