Funeral services for Thomas G. Ray, 96, of Madison, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. Reverend Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 35 and VFW Post 5763 Hoelscher Miller Post. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Resseguie Funeral Home in Madison.
Mr. Ray died at the Countryside Home in Madison, Sunday, February 6, 2011.
Tom was born in Madison, NE, in the family home, on November 10, 1914, the son of George and Mary (Vlanzy) Ray. He was raised in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in the class of 1935. He worked as a meat cutter prior to military service.
On October 20, 1941, Tom entered the US Army. He served in the European Theater as a field lineman. He assisted in laying of wire for battery net of field artillery battalion. Tom, later, supervised and assisted in the maintenance of communication lines. Tom was awarded six Bronze Stars for his service in the Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He received his honorable discharge on September 28, 1945.
Following his discharge, Tom returned to Madison where he was employed at the Madison Co-op Creamery. Part of his responsibilities was to test the cream.
On January 19, 1946, Tom married his long-time sweetheart, Laverna Boysen, at her family home in rural Madison. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Linda, and a son, Joe. The family made their home in Madison. In 1961, Laverna lost her battle with cancer. Tom continued to raise his young family here in Madison with the help of family and especially his late sister-in-law, Lucile Boysen.
Following his retirement from the Madison Co-op Creamery, in 1975, Tom moved to Norfolk. He returned to Madison in 1997, at the age of 83, where he was able to live in his own home until last year. He enjoyed his daily walk downtown. Tom and son, Joe, would take a ride almost daily, to check out the wild turkeys and other wildlife in the area.
In his younger years, Tom enjoyed dancing at the King's Ballroom and Riverside Ballroom in Norfolk. He had a life-long desire to fish and enjoyed cooking everything they caught.
He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. Tom was a member of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department for over 70 years. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Tom enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and family.
Those left to celebrate his life and mourn his absence here on earth are his daughter Linda and her husband, Don Unger, of Fremont, NE, his son, Joe and his wife, Marilyn, of Madison, NE; Granddaughters, Stephanie and husband, Rich Scott, of Madison, NE, Samantha Unger, of Fremont, NE, Toni and her husband, Rudy Mettler, of Omaha, NE; grandsons, Joey Ray of Norfolk, Bryan Unger, of Seattle, WA, and Nathan Unger, of Lincoln, NE; great grandsons Trystan Scott and R.J. Mettler; great granddaughters, Emmerson Scott and Kaelyn Mettler; one sister, Nadine Werth, of Lincoln, and brother Dick and his wife Betty, of Madison, NE; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sisters, Carolyn Doncheski and Affie Morrisey.
