On October 20, 1941, Tom entered the US Army. He served in the European Theater as a field lineman. He assisted in laying of wire for battery net of field artillery battalion. Tom, later, supervised and assisted in the maintenance of communication lines. Tom was awarded six Bronze Stars for his service in the Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.
